SLSN ATC Bot (07-14)

The "SLSN" air traffic control bot located at Second Norway Lufthavn (July 2014).

An Air Traffic Control Bot (or ATC Bot) is an avatar which is controlled by a machine, rather than by a human. Bots are used throughout Second Life for various reasons, mainly for automating repetitive or impractical tasks such as performing group invitations.

In the context of Second Life aviation, an ATC Bot interacts with pilots via the 119.200 MHz group (for continents connected to the Blake Sea) or 117.900 MHz group (for Sansara and Heterocera Atoll),122.700 MHz Grid Wide ATC Group and simulates the actions of real-life ATC personnel. The system can use both Second Life's built-in "group chat" system and GridTalkie for communication. ATC bots are named after their airport's respective ICAO code and are usually located in its control tower.

Interacting with bots

ATC bots function by responding to trigger words (eg. "takeoff" or "landing") in comments posted on a supported "group chat" or GridTalkie channel. When formulating a request for the bot, commas must be used between the bot's name, the pilot's call-sign and the request. If commas are not included, the bot will not be able to handle the request. If the pilot does not specify an call-sign in their request, the ATC will refer to them by their avatar name.

The following is a list of some of the requests that an ATC bot will respond to (including words which trigger the response and examples of possible dialogue):
