The Robinson R44 Clipper (ICAO: R44 / WAKE: LIGHT) is a two-bladed, four-seat light helicopter. Created in Second Life by Michie Marine, the helicopter was loosely based on the real-life R44 Clipper manufactured by Robinson Helicopter.

Background

The real-life Robinson R44 Clipper is a single-engined helicopter with a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor and a two-bladed tail rotor and a skid landing gear. It has an enclosed cabin with two rows of side-by-side seating for a pilot and three passengers. Tail rotor direction of rotation on the R44 is reversed compared to the R22 for improved yaw control authority. On the R44 the advancing blade is on the bottom.[1]

Michie Marine's R44 Clipper comes equipped with four working doors, pontoons and functioning beacon light. The R44 does not use the standard cylic/collective controls and physics, ubiquitous in Second Life helicopters. Instead Michie Marine has opted for a system where the pilot physically tilts the helicopter down to make it move forward while using the pg-up/down keys to increase/decrease vertical movement.

Features

  • Pilot's heads-up display (HUD) attachment with:
    • Doors open/closed, auto-cruise, camera control and engine on/off switches.
  • Animated components (main rotor, tail rotor, doors).
  • Exterior lighting (beacon).
  • Floats (with water spray particle effects).
